There are many known benefits of Marijuana medically. According to Medical Today, scientific studies show that marijuana has been useful in treating chronic pain. Cannabinoids, one of the active ingredients in marijuana, act on the same brain receptor in relieving chronic pain. According to the American Cancer Society, it has been shown that marijuana can be helpful to relieve nausea from chemotherapy in cancer patients by oral cannabinoids. With studies on marijuana and cancer in the lab, scientists have proven that cannabinoids can slow growth of cancer cells in the body.
Economic Benefits of Legalizing Marijuana
According to Mrinalini Krishna from Investopedia, sales from marijuana in states that have legalized it, have benefited the states heavily by collecting taxes that have totaled to over millions of dollars. Another economic benefit of legalizing marijuana is that it will create more jobs. In Nevada, it is estimated that the marijuana industry including dispensaries and farms, will produce over 41,000 jobs.
How Legalizing Marijuana Has been Theorized To Deter Crime
According to the Huffington Post, the lead author, Robert Morris, believes that legalizing marijuana does not increase violence, but rather can deter crime. A study was done by University of Texas-Dallas by professors and students to look at crime rates in correlation to states that have legalized marijuana and those who hadn't during 1990-2006. They found that over time, the 11 states that had legalized it, that after the legislation passed, violent rates of crime such as homicide and assault, had actually decreased.
